Reactivity Series With Underdog Academy

3:00 - 4:00 pm

Does your dog overreact (growl, lunge, bark) when they see dogs, people, or other stimuli? Underdog Academy's 2-part Reactivity Series will get you started on the path to improved leash skills and calmer outings.

This is designed in 2 sessions. The first session will cover management, defensive handling, and foundation training for focus. The second session will dive into desensitization and counter-conditioning to address the emotional components of your dog's reactivity.

  • Limit 2 people per dog; 1 handler per dog
  • Handlers must be 18 years or older
  • Age minimum to attend: 13 years old

If you feel your dog will not do well or be able to focus in an active environment of people and dogs, even with a visual barrier provided, you should consider the 'audit' option. This allows you to view the classes outside of the instruction arena without your dog present.

Interactive session; dog present:  $100

Paint Your Pet
Saturday June 25th, 2022 2:00 PM until 05:00 PM
Location: Pup Plaza
14408 Union Avenue San Jose CA 95124

Join us to create your own, one-of-a-kind acrylic pet portrait on canvas, done in a colorful style inspired by American Pop Artist Andy Warhol. No artistic experience is necessary!

We begin with a short lesson about painting techniques with 3 different brush types. Then, we'll walk you through each step of the process - from transferring your pet's image to the canvas with graphite, to painting the background, to painting the main features of your pet, to the final finishing details. We will use vibrant, non-toxic acrylic paints. All art materials will be provided.

Before the class begins, we will need you to email us a high-resolution digital photo of your pet. Uncropped, full-body shots or face shots with uncluttered backgrounds work best. Also, pictures with good contrast work well. Please email pandamai@pmbq.com if you have any questions about photo choice and guidance, Mai is happy to help you.

Introduction to Reiki
Saturday January 28th, 2023 1:00 PM until 02:00 PM
Location: Pup Plaza
14408 Union Avenue San Jose CA 95124

This is a short introduction course in opening your mind and heart to loving-kindness and connecting with Animals through Reiki.

What is Reiki?
The word, "Reiki" means, literally "Spiritual Energy". It refers to the energy that makes up all things in the universe--in other words, the energetic substance that quantum physicists talk about and study. Reiki "the system", on the other hand, refers to a Japanese system created by Mikao Usui in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The original purpose of the system was spiritual development, but in modern times the emphasis has evolved as a system of energetic healing, utilizing specific Japanese meditative practices and breathing techniques.

What does a Reiki Practitioner Do?
Reiki practitioners use intention, focus and meditation to build a sort of energetic "healing bridge". The bridge is built upon the foundation of the practitioner's dedication to his or her Reiki personal practice, energetic experience and purity of intention. The bridge itself consists of the energetic harmony and balance that is the essence of Reiki. When animals are stressed, sick, or injured, you could say that energetically, they are "imbalanced". By offering an energetic connection and bridge of "balance", the practitioner is offering the animal a support system that the animal can use to relax, self-heal, and "rebalance".

What to expect:
1 hr introduction course to traditional Reiki precepts and meditation practices. Meditating with animals can help you let go of things that are holding you back from finding your true happiness in life. Your animals will feel the benefits of healing emotional, trauma behaviors and physical ailments. The path of healing is a lifelong journey of peeling back the layers that cover up your inner light. Get ready to receive the joyful gift of abundant healing; the animals will show you the way!

About the Instructor:
Casey Dowling is a Let Animals Lead® method Practitioner trained by Kathleen Prasad. Kathleen has created the Let Animals Lead® method not just as a bold new approach to Animal Reiki, but also as a model for advocating for holistic healing that is animal-led and supports living with compassion and loving-kindness in the world. The Shelter Animal Reiki Association [SARA] is a community of Let Animals Lead® Animal Reiki practitioner and teacher volunteers committed to supporting rescued animals and their caregivers with the healing benefits of meditation. The Let Animals Lead® method of Animal Reiki/meditation supports all aspects of healing. Our proprietary methods can help animals become more adoptable, and help their caretakers stay strong and calm in even the most difficult situations.

Casey has been an animal practitioner since 2019. She spends her extra time volunteering with Silicon Valley Pet Project in San Jose, California and is involved in a program called Dog Day Out. This program allows large dogs to be taken out of the San Jose Animal Care Center for a few hours to go on walks. SVPP is a San Jose-based organization. Inspired by the innovative spirit of Silicon Valley, their goal is to create a professional, sustainable animal welfare organization that celebrates rescue pets.

Introduction to Loose Leash Walking
Saturday February 10th, 2024 12:00 PM until 01:00 PM
Location: Pup Plaza
14408 Union Avenue San Jose CA 95124

Cost: Free

Is your dog a puller? Is it a challenge to manage your pup's enthusiasm for the outdoors when walking the neighborhood or hiking on trails? We have all had this challenge!

Please join us for a demonstration and instruction on beginning to teach your dog to walk comfortably and happily with a loose leash.

This is a HUMANS ONLY introduction. We will have a demonstration dog at the event, but to minimize distractions, please leave your pup at home.

Our instructor for this event is Annelliese Delacroix. Annelliese specializes in relationship-based training, helping dogs and owners overcome everything from leash-pulling to reactivity and aggression. She holds a certificate in dog behavior from England and is currently working toward her animal behavior certification - CBCC-KA (Certified Behavior Consultant Canine Knowledge-Assessed). Annelliese uses force-free methods— she helps dogs succeed by working at their pace, and by keeping training fun.  She prefers force-free methods because it allows people to build deeper, more trusting bonds with their canine companions.

Annelliese is mom to the amazing Maze, a gorgeous Belgian Malinois, and she recently fostered Charlie, an American Staffordshire Terrier, with Silicon Valley Pet Project.

Understanding Dog Body Language
Saturday April 13th, 2024 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM
Location: Pup Plaza
14408 Union Avenue San Jose CA 95124

Understanding Dog Body Language
Date: April 13th from 11am - 12pm
Fee: FREE!

Learn how to read your dogs' body language to better understand what they are thinking, feeling, and focusing on. This will help you predict their behavior, evaluate your training or behavior modification sessions, and bring you closer to your pup.  We will discuss why a wagging tail doesn’t always mean “happy”, and why that cute dog-and-baby moment might not be as heartwarming as you think - except when it is!

**This is a lecture only event - please leave your dogs at home!**

Stacy Braslau-Schneck, the owner of Stacy’s Wag’N’Train, has been a professional dog trainer for over 25 years.  Her intense interest in behavior led her to getting a Master’s degree in “human and animal cognition”, and she continues to upkeep her education to ensure that the teaching and training methods she uses are the most effective and humane for both dogs and their people. She holds several certifications in dog training, teaching, and more from several independent evaluating agencies, and she is happy to talk about dogs, training, and behavior to everyone! Paint Your Pet
Saturday May 25th, 2024 2:00 PM until 05:00 PM

About The Instructor:
Phuong-Mai “Mai” Blasich is the founder artist of P.M.B.Q. Studios, a graphic and panda arts studio in San Jose, CA. Mai’s creative career began in 1993 as a comic artist in Antarctic Press’ series, Ninja High School. She has done work with Marvel Comics, Dark Horse Comics, and went on to self-publish her action-comedy comic Tea Club. You can also see Mai’s public mural work in downtown San Jose at the “First Street Panda Cafe & Bakery, a 180 foot-long mural stretching around the corner of North First and San Fernando Streets and also at Pup Plaza! Her work focuses on cheerful animal characters doing everyday things, striving to remind us to stop, enjoy and appreciate the simple things in life.

The event takes place indoors at Pup Plaza and is limited to 12 participants.

Focus Your Dog's Attention!
Saturday July 27th, 2024 1:00 PM until 02:30 PM
Location: Pup Plaza
14408 Union Avenue San Jose CA 95124

This workshop is designed to help you manage your dog's attention more effectively. These exercises, based on Leslie McDevitt’s “Control Unleashed” system, are great for teaching dogs to focus their attention on their owners, resulting in better recalls, less pulling on a walk, and even being able to pass by distractions such as cats, squirrels, and other dogs or humans that your pup might normally over-react to! Friendly, non-aggressive dogs are welcome to attend with their handlers. Please indicate if you intend to bring a dog with you in your registration. If your dog is reactive, we ask that you keep your dog at home, but highly encourage you to join us and learn some exercises to practice at home!
