Unwind after work with color and cats! Join local artist, and The Dancing Cat contributor, Stefanie Sylvester as she leads this Thursday night workshop to support your exploration of color, brushes, drawing and composition, as well as techniques and tricks that will get you playing and creating with watercolors! Gather your BFFs, bring a beverage, a snack, and picture of your family feline for inspiration! All artists 12 years old and up, with all levels of experience (from beginning to advanced), are welcome! Artists 12 to 14 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Workshop Fee: $40 (includes materials – and creative critique by a few cats). The maximum number of signups is 10. About the Artist: Stefanie Sylvester is a teaching artist with an emphasis on painting and drawing. Graduating from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, she's worked and exhibited across the U.S., developing an interest in arts education after settling in the Bay Area seven years ago. Her informal and accessible exploration of techniques is perfect for beginning and experienced artists alike. Join the fabulous felines of The Dancing Cat for Fold a Cat Friday! Introduce your kids (and yourself) to Origami, the Japanese art of paper folding. These little sculptures are folded from one sheet of square paper and teach us patience, concentration, and create a sense of achievement. This workshop is best for kids ages 8 – 13, with all levels of experience (from beginning to advanced) welcome! Workshop Fee: $15 (includes materials – and interaction with adorable and adoptable real life cats). Maximum Signups: 10 Parents/Guardians: If you're interested in learning along with your aspiring artists, please sign up too! Folders 10-years and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Saturday August 18th, 2018 | 10AM-11:45AM In our fast-paced, fur-raising world there are many reasons to take a moment to learn origami, the ancient paper folding art which has long roots in both Japan and China; relaxed focus, gentle critical thinking, hand-eye coordination, and creative expression all come together as you put paws to paper. Are you more mathematically- than artistically-inclined? Come put geometry and fractions to work in creating beautiful paper sculptures. Origami is an art form for everyone – peaceful, portable, upcycle-able, and perfect for making paper cats! During this workshop Denise Wang, of the South Bay Origami Group, will lead folders through the basics of origami, and into a few feline-inspired sculptures for you to show off at home. This workshop is intended for folders 12-years old and up, and artists of all skill level (from beginner, to more experienced) are welcome. You are welcome to bring a beverage or snack of your liking, or buy something from (and support) The Dancing Cat. Wifi, catnip, and kitty-critiques are on the house. Class fee: $30 per person Only 10 spots available, so sign up soon! About Denise: Denise used to fold traditional Origami models as a kid. In recent years, a series of incidental encounters reconnected her with this childhood hobby, and opened her eyes to the fascinating world of modern day Origami and the multitude of intricate techniques involved in paper folding. Since this reconnection, Origami has become a channel for her creativity, acts as a form of meditation, and become an unexpected platform for learning. Currently, Denise continues her Origami journey while teaching this incredibly fun art form to others. Sunday August 19th, 2018 | 10:00AM-12:00PM When you take a look around your neighborhood, do you notice cats in your area that don’t seem to have a home? Have you found a litter of kittens and wondered whom to call? Join community cat experts Teri Monbureau and Christine Hernandez for a free workshop introducing Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), feral cat management practices, local resources for feral cat spay/neuter, and proper use of humane traps. This workshop will offer the knowledge and skills needed to help feral kittens and stray cats in your community. This workshop is free; donations are always appreciated and all funds go directly toward The Dancing Cat's mission of connecting loving, wonderful adult cats with their forever homes. All ages welcome! About the Presenters: Teri got involved with cat rescue in 2014 volunteering for feral colony care with 13th Street Cats, a San Jose local rescue organization. A few weeks of care and feeding of several managed colonies made her aware of the pronounced need for additional trappers to spay/neuter newly arrived community cats as well as to get sick or injured colony members to a vet for treatment. She attended a TNR training session, watched YouTube videos on trapping cats, and has been a proponent of it ever since! Unleash your inner Pup-casso! You’ll create your own, one-of-a-kind acrylic pup portrait on canvas, done in a style inspired by American Pop Artist Andy Warhol. We'll walk you through each step of the process - from transferring your pup's image to the canvas with graphite, to painting the background, to painting the main features of your pup, to the final finishing details. We will use vibrant, non-toxic acrylic paints. No artistic experience is necessary! Before the class begins, we will need you to email us a high-resolution digital photo of your pup. Uncropped, full-body shots with uncluttered backgrounds work best. All art materials and light refreshments will be provided. About the instructor: Mai is the founder artist of P.M.B.Q. Studios, a graphic and panda arts studio in San Jose, CA. Join us for Doga at Pup Plaza, Silicon Valley's first dog community center! Your Doga instructor will guide you and your pup through a 60-minute yoga practice and provide moments throughout the class for you to bond, reward, and breathe with your dog. You will be encouraged to share your energy with your dog and explore the natural bond that exists between you and your canine best friend. Doga will provide you an opportunity to learn from your dog how to be in the present and have fun, while our dogs may pick up the calm and focus of our practice, eventually becoming more relaxed and comfortable with sharing a space with others. About the Instructor: Joannie Loobey has been practicing Reiki since 2014. She is trained in the Traditional Japanese Usui Reiki Linage. She holds the title of Okuden Advanced Animal Reiki II and Shinpinden Teacher Reiki III by SARA (Shelter Animal Reki Association). Joannie began her journey by attending the SARA (Shelter Animal Rescue Association) Animal Retreat held at Ratna Ling Tibetan Buddhist Retreat on the California Coast in 2014. We'll address common behavioral issues as needed, show you how to teach basic commands, and help you and your dog find a more harmonious relationship at home.
