Wednesday June 20th, 2018, 4:00PM-5:00PM Kids and cats rejoice! It's time for summer reading! The San Jose Public Library will host its fourth annual event at The Dancing Cat, San Jose’s first creative space for people and cats! Children are invited to practice their reading skills with library books and the resident kitties, and make progress on their summer learning log! The Dancing Cat gives adorable, adoptable felines a chance to shine in a charming, casual, and comfortable environment. Admission to this special library program is free, but space is very limited so pre-registration is necessary. This event is for ages 6 and up, accompanied by an adult. No children younger than 6, please. Books, wifi, and the occasional purr will be available to you at The Dancing Cat! Please feel free to bring a beverage or snack of choice. This cat-on-mat event invites 12 lucky humans to treat themselves to a 75-minute vinyasa flow at The Dancing Cat! Set your intention and practice focusing your attention amidst our adorable adoptable kitties. After final OMs are offered to the divine abiding of all sentient beings, you are invited to enjoy chill time with the resident cats. Your donation of $40 will benefit The Dancing Cat. All levels are welcome! Please bring your yoga mat. About Susan Love: Teaching yoga since 2006, Susan's teaching philosophy is to develop sequences that are challenging, yet accessible to all levels. Friday, June 29th, 7:00PM-8:30PM What is dainty and nimble, sounds softer than a mandolin and sweeter than a banjo? An evocative evening of strings is next up in The Dancing Cat's series of Mew~sic Nights. Join the resident felines as they welcome masterful Bay Area musician Glenn Staller, with a special accompaniment by his talented student Lucas Wang. Be charmed by contemporary interpretations on the delightful ukulele, and be wooed by the warm, resonate complexity of guitar in traditional classical, flamenco, South American, and contemporary musical styles. Bring a favorite beverage for a memorable date night, or come solo and meet new friends (two-legged and four-legged), and immerse yourself in an evening of captivating sound. Admission: $30 (includes time with the cats!) There are 12 seats available for this musical journey About the artists: Glenn Staller began his musical studies at the age of 14. Initially self-taught, Glenn has studied with many outstanding instructors and mentors, including Rey de la Torre, Julian White, Chuscales, and Dusan Bogdanovic at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Glenn concentrates on Classical, Brazilian, Argentine, Flamenco, and other regional guitar styles. In addition to teaching guitar, theory, and piano, Glenn is currently also writing instructional books and videos for both guitar and ukulele. He performs frequently throughout the Bay Area. Thirteen year old Lucas Wang is a resident of Cupertino and has been playing the ukulele for two years and guitar for one year. Upon purchasing his first ukulele, Lucas taught himself how to play with the help of the internet. After the first year he decided to take the instrument seriously and began taking private lessons with Glenn. A year ago, Lucas decided to learn guitar as his primary instrument. However, on a visit to China last summer, he could only take his ukulele with him, Lucas rediscovered ukulele and it now remains his favorite instrument. SVPP is partnering with artist Roan Victor and The Arsenal to offer multiple opportunities to create an acrylic painting of your beloved pet while at the same time giving to other pets in need. Proceeds from these workshops will support Silicon Valley Pet Project's life-saving programs. Bring a photo of your pet for this two-hour instructed workshop and unleash your creativity! Who Can Attend: All artists 12-years old and up, with all levels of experience (from beginning to advanced) are welcome! Artists 12 to 14 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Date: June 30th from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm. Please arrive by 2:15 pm in order to start painting by 2:00 pm. Unwind after work with color and cats! Join local artist, and The Dancing Cat contributor, Stefanie Sylvester as she leads this Thursday night workshop to support your exploration of color, brushes, drawing and composition, as well as techniques and tricks that will get you playing and creating with watercolors! Gather your BFFs, bring a beverage, a snack, and picture of your family feline for inspiration! All artists 12 years old and up, with all levels of experience (from beginning to advanced), are welcome! Artists 12 to 14 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Workshop Fee: $40 (includes materials – and creative critique by a few cats). The maximum number of signups is 10. About the Artist: Stefanie Sylvester is a teaching artist with an emphasis on painting and drawing. Join the fabulous felines of The Dancing Cat for Fold a Cat Friday! Introduce your kids (and yourself) to Origami, the Japanese art of paper folding. These little sculptures are folded from one sheet of square paper and teach us patience, concentration, and create a sense of achievement. This workshop is best for kids ages 8 – 13, with all levels of experience (from beginning to advanced) welcome! Workshop Fee: $15 (includes materials – and interaction with adorable and adoptable real life cats). Maximum Signups: 10 Parents/Guardians: If you're interested in learning along with your aspiring artists, please sign up too! Folders 10-years and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Saturday August 18th, 2018 | 10AM-11:45AM In our fast-paced, fur-raising world there are many reasons to take a moment to learn origami, the ancient paper folding art which has long roots in both Japan and China; relaxed focus, gentle critical thinking, hand-eye coordination, and creative expression all come together as you put paws to paper. Are you more mathematically- than artistically-inclined? Come put geometry and fractions to work in creating beautiful paper sculptures. Origami is an art form for everyone – peaceful, portable, upcycle-able, and perfect for making paper cats! During this workshop Denise Wang, of the South Bay Origami Group, will lead folders through the basics of origami, and into a few feline-inspired sculptures for you to show off at home. This workshop is intended for folders 12-years old and up, and artists of all skill level (from beginner, to more experienced) are welcome. You are welcome to bring a beverage or snack of your liking, or buy something from (and support) The Dancing Cat. Wifi, catnip, and kitty-critiques are on the house. Class fee: $30 per person Only 10 spots available, so sign up soon! About Denise: Denise used to fold traditional Origami models as a kid. In recent years, a series of incidental encounters reconnected her with this childhood hobby, and opened her eyes to the fascinating world of modern day Origami and the multitude of intricate techniques involved in paper folding. Since this reconnection, Origami has become a channel for her creativity, acts as a form of meditation, and become an unexpected platform for learning. Currently, Denise continues her Origami journey while teaching this incredibly fun art form to others. Sunday August 19th, 2018 | 10:00AM-12:00PM When you take a look around your neighborhood, do you notice cats in your area that don’t seem to have a home? Have you found a litter of kittens and wondered whom to call? Join community cat experts Teri Monbureau and Christine Hernandez for a free workshop introducing Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), feral cat management practices, local resources for feral cat spay/neuter, and proper use of humane traps. This workshop will offer the knowledge and skills needed to help feral kittens and stray cats in your community. This workshop is free; donations are always appreciated and all funds go directly toward The Dancing Cat's mission of connecting loving, wonderful adult cats with their forever homes. All ages welcome! About the Presenters: Teri got involved with cat rescue in 2014 volunteering for feral colony care with 13th Street Cats, a San Jose local rescue organization. A few weeks of care and feeding of several managed colonies made her aware of the pronounced need for additional trappers to spay/neuter newly arrived community cats as well as to get sick or injured colony members to a vet for treatment. She attended a TNR training session, watched YouTube videos on trapping cats, and has been a proponent of it ever since! Your Doga instructor will guide you and your pup through a 60-minute yoga practice and provide moments throughout the class for you to bond, reward, and breathe with your dog. Unleash your inner Pup-casso! You’ll create your own, one-of-a-kind acrylic pup portrait on canvas, done in a style inspired by American Pop Artist Andy Warhol. We'll walk you through each step of the process - from transferring your pup's image to the canvas with graphite, to painting the background, to painting the main features of your pup, to the final finishing details. We will use vibrant, non-toxic acrylic paints. No artistic experience is necessary! Before the class begins, we will need you to email us a high-resolution digital photo of your pup. Uncropped, full-body shots with uncluttered backgrounds work best. All art materials and light refreshments will be provided. About the instructor: Mai is the founder artist of P.M.B.Q. We'll address common behavioral issues as needed, show you how to teach basic commands, and help you and your dog find a more harmonious relationship at home. Join us to create your own, one-of-a-kind acrylic pet portrait on canvas, done in a colorful style inspired by American Pop Artist Andy Warhol. No artistic experience is necessary! We begin with a short lesson about painting techniques with 3 different brush types. Then, we'll walk you through each step of the process - from transferring your pet's image to the canvas with graphite, to painting the background, to painting the main features of your pet, to the final finishing details. We will use vibrant, non-toxic acrylic paints. All art materials and light refreshments will be provided.
